I am a big fan of the film The Untouchables. The story of how Elliot Ness and his team took down Al Capone inspires me, and I learned a lot about personal development from watching it.
My favourite character in the film is Jim Malone. Played by Sean Connery, Malone was the street-wise cop who took decisive action to get stuff done in a no-fuss, direct way.
My favourite scene in the film is when Malone and Ness are talking in a church. Ness says he wants to get Capone, and Malone asks him a simple question:
"What are you prepared to do?"
This scene perfectly illustrates how we should deal with our problems and challenges. First, we need to become clear on the issues and challenges. Elliot Ness was clear: Mr Capone was his problem. What Malone's questions did for him and can do for us is sharpen his focus on what we needed to change to do it.
Now, Change can take time; we must be patient. Change can be tough; we must be resilient. Change can look hopeless; we must have faith.
Add the attributes of patience, resilience, and faith to clarity about the problem, and you have the foundations for meaningful change. But only if you take action and do the work.
If you're facing some challenges and know you need to change, you must get clear, deploy some patience, resilience, and faith, and then go about the work. It's not easy, but it's straightforward.
So, if you're reading this and you know changes are required in your life, I will offer you Jim Malone's question:
"What are you prepared to do?"
Get clear on what that is, and do it.
Follow that advice, and you will become untouchable in a shorter time than you may think.
Take Care
