Small Goals

While tidying up recently, I found an old journal from 2009. Inside, I found a list of goals I had set that year. Out of 12 goals, I had completed zero. Not one.

They were big, scary, totally unrealistic goals that, in hindsight, were impossible, bordering on stupid. But back then, I was relatively new to the whole personal development world, and this was the typical advice I read in self-help books. Aim high and set ambitious goals. I have since realised this is terrible advice, but it does sell books.

Over the years, I've learned that the key to progress isn't huge, intimidating goals but small, achievable ones. Setting realistic, bite-sized goals that we can accomplish within a few months builds momentum, keeps you motivated, and delivers results faster than dreaming big.

Big goals often leave us stuck in analysis paralysis. But setting smaller, actionable goals, challenging yet achievable, keeps you moving forward. Aim for goals you can complete in three months or less. Once you hit one target, set the next one. By doing this consistently, you can accomplish four meaningful things each year, which is more than enough to get you ahead. Meanwhile, others will still be chirping on about their "billionaire with a Ferrari" goals and getting nowhere fast while you've already made real progress.

Small goals create steady, consistent progress, and steady and consistent will always win.

Rather than overwhelming yourself with a distant dream, take small steps that lead to bigger achievements over time. It's not about perfection but about steady growth. The momentum you build will take you further, faster than if you were to chase huge, scary goals that feel out of reach.

There's still time this year to make progress and set the foundation for 2025. Don't wait for the new year to start working on your goals; we've all been caught in that trap. You won't magically become motivated or change your habits just because the calendar flips. Start now. Whether starting a fitness routine, learning something new, or building a business, set a small, achievable goal today. With consistent action, you'll be amazed at how much you can accomplish by the end of the year.

Forget the "I'll be a billionaire in six months" mentality. Focus on the small wins, build momentum, and you'll see far better results.

Right, I am off to have another look at the Ferrari brochure.
